  • Accountant recommendation Manawatu

    Hey everyone,
Can any of you recommend a good accountant in the manawatu area, preferably one who specialises in investment property.

    Thanks

    Hi Bigbob,

There is only a few accountants in NZ who really specialise in property, and I don't think there are any in Manawatu.

If you are into property investment, then rather than focus on the area, I would suggest getting a real specialist. Obviously I recommend my firm, but otherwise GRA in Auckland are good. Most other firms do everything and don't really focus on property investment. By not understanding, they miss the little tips and tricks that can make all the difference.

Through skype, emails, phone calls, it doesn't really matter where in the world your accountant is. We have an office associated to us in Palmerston North, which focuses on business. But it could give you an office to drop stuff off to, if that is what you require?

    General suggestions I would make
    - ring the firm up, or view their website. If you are not obviously told that the firm only does property, then they don't specialise in property
    - don't go for a one man band - What happens if they are sick, on holiday etc? Also it is very hard to have good internal systems and reviews (hard to review your own work)
    - Chartered Accountants are generally better, as they have to do compulsory training each year

If you want to have a chat about our firm, or accountants in general. Ring, email or PM me to organise a free 10-15 chat

Just had a glance at Bennettcurrie website to be curious

"We provide accounting services to many businesses, and have also developed an in-depth knowledge of the farming and hospitality industries."

Also from there home page they concentrate on farming and business.

I would recommend going with an accountant who specialises in property!

GRA are very good, and Withers Tsang seem to be very good as well. Both specialise in property.

Not in Manawatu but as a poster above stated that is not generally necessary with modern technology.

PKF Rutherfords is an accounting form in Palmerston North I have dealt with before, they were good also.

Lots of little things that come up from dealing in property all the time.

Some of them are basic property understanding, particularly on strategy and what an investor is trying to achieve. Also loans and interest rates, are common discussions. I find that advisors who don't seriously invest in property the selves, don't really understand property as an investment.

Others are more technical such as structures to invest in US, or for to trade properties.

I have seen many accountants miss lots of deductions and also miss opportunities to restructure.

In some cases accountants are claiming deductions that are no longer allowed, and they are way out of date.

Information such as newsletters, from a property accountant are all focused on property, so are more useful to property investors.

By focusing on one topic you get very good at it, and you can spend hours investigating new options or changes. Whereas firms doing farming, auditing, business and property are spread too thin.
