If you think it doesn't exist here in NZ take a look at what personal attacks were levelled at Conservative Party leader Colin Craig by TVNZ Seven Sharp 24.4.13. The issue of free speech has being steadily eroded regarding opposing opinion on the same sex marriage bill.
Whether you agreed with Colin or not , can you stomach the vitriolic personal attack here by 3 TVNZ news panellists : Alison Mau, Greg Boyed & Jesse Mulligan:

Maybe it's just really uncool to not want gay marriage.
France has passed it into law and I thought that would have been out of the question given the high percentage of catholics.
Australia is evidently just really uncool.....and NZ is really cool so is France and a lot of the states in USA and (15 countries so far).
cheers,

Homophobia = fear of homosexuals
Heterophobia = fear of heterosexuals
So I'm not sure how they can use that word in relation to people thinking the anti-gay crowd are idiots? That's not fear is it? Free speech is not being eroded at all. You can oppose but if you talk a load of rubbish expect to get called on it... go back to the gay marriage thread. Complete crap from the anti-gay marriage people with no rational argument!
Colin Craig was made fun of because a lot of people think he's laughable.You can find me at: Energise Web Design

Two thumbs up to drelly!
No, I do not believe we have rampant heterophobia in NZ. We certainly have a majority of people who disagree with hate speech and smear campaigns, but last time I checked, agreeing with those activities was not a prerequisite for being classified as a heterosexual. I'm reasonably sure (if I'm remembering high school biology correctly) that heterosexuality is just the scientific name for a person who is sexually attracted to people of the opposite sex. If there is a campaign against that sort of behaviour, I've obviously missed their pamphlet.

No matter what position one holds on the "gay marriage bill" debate ;most hate speech reported in the media was directed toward anyone who was vocal in their oppostion too the same sex marriage bill.The "homophobic" label was bandied around almost carte blanche by many activists in the GLBT movement toward anyone that spoke out against the bill despite public opinion polls that showed a major sliding toward overall public opposition to the bill . As a gross example of the extreme invective shown, an attack was levied on Conservative Party leader Colin Craig who was called a nutter, a dufus & a smarmy rich prick by show host Jesse Mulligan on the Seven Sharp TVNZ program in a segment named "How to make fun of Colin Craig".. If we tolerate this kind of personal level of abuse & say its ok because some people hold differing views to us personally then its a very bad double standard & a sad day for our supposed democracy when people cannot express opposing points of view without fear of being personally attacked & ridiculed.
This is a link that shows the extent of personal attack sanctioned by TVNZ, supposedly an organisation that follows the broadcasting standards of fairness & decency:

Oh, come on - I hardly think any rational person takes Seven Sharp seriously. I haven't seen the segment quoted and don't have audio so can't play it, but it sounds like the host / show said some unprofessional and inappropriate things. But surely their problem was with his desire to stop gay people from enjoying the same rights he does, rather than the fact that he's attracted to women?

MrSaneperson,
1. All politicians get a major smashing by the media at some time or other.
2. Jesse Mulligan was expressing his own opinions.
3. I'm sure there were some people offended by Jesse's opinions in the same way some people were offended by Colin Craig's opinions.
4. Maybe he deserved or even *should* be attacked for his views.
5. Maybe he should read his own website...

I may think that about you but my own code of conduct, integrity & professional behaviour expected by my employer TVNZ would prevent me from an outright vocal character assasination against you. Attack the message of opinion, by all means but not the messenger.Last edited by mrsaneperson; 01-06-2013, 05:06 AM.
