Seven Sharp is such a lame show... it's like facebook on TV. In fact, they put facebook comments on the screen. It had nothing to do with journalism and is pure infotainment.

I am not making any comments on the quality of the programming.

However, it is nice to see a mass-media item that shows the public that being a Residential Landlord is not just all about tax dodging and champagne.

yes, it's nice to see that media can present both sides of the story

then people can better understand the risks involved for LL

and need for checks, inspections etc

Andrew made a couple of good points
    - maybe the LL should get a PM
    - and if they can't afford a PM and can't manage the property properly themselves then maybe they shouldn't be a LL.

Default Reality TV is not good for NZ

Why would you see it as a LL problem? There was a series “The Filthiest House” or so – it is a shocking reflexion.

From what I saw on the article the LL didn't do much in the way of regular inspections. I would be surprised if they were model tenants one inspection and 4-6mths later they had trashed the place.

Yes, you can do everything by the books and still it does not take more than a month to trash a place. Frustrated or careless people only need few days.
The question is why live people like that and why do they get away with that?
Only a tough selection process can resolve it for the LL. Unfortunately at this point inexperienced LL fail mostly to avoid longer vacancies.

In this case though the LL admitted he got behind in his inspections.

Finding out during inspection that the place is trashed is an experience, not the solution. Getting these people out might be a nightmare, too. Processes to avoid people putting your property on risk is the only solution.
