Len Brown, National and Labour too... all chumps in a sly game.
Likely just the tip of a larger hidden subversive attempt to gain control and influence.
I reckon this is just a small taste of what's to come.

    • It is time we had an ICAC; Independent Commission against Corruption in this country, the same as others do.

      Businessman gifts $150k to Labour
Millionaire businessman Donghua Liu spent more than $150,000 on the previous Labour government, including $100,000 on a bottle of wine signed by former prime minister Helen Clark at a party fundraiser.
Edwards said the case highlighted the need for a regulatory body separate from the Electoral Commission "to look at questions of corruption and irregularities" around political donations.

The experience is Australia is that the Chinese are buying off the plan high rise apartments. They love apartments in Sydney with a view.
The big danger with the Chinese is that they are in fact also buying FREEHOLD FARMING LAND and moronic Australian governments think that this is great but refuse to confront the fact that in 100 years time the food produced from this land will not be available to a much larger domestic population (100 million figure tossed around) and that the food will simply be loaded onto Chinese ships and sailed back to China where it will then be sold. Not even a single tax dollar will be left in Australia and stupid Australians will be struggling to feed themselves whilst the Chinese will NEVER surrender the land because IT IS THEIRS FOREVER. That is what the word 'freehold' entails.
It is good to see that you kiwis are a bit smarter than us Aussies and do not permit your farming land to be sold to foreigners let alone foreign governments like ours. Perhaps that's why we can't beat you in the rugby either.
With respect to our ICAC.....good idea but a toothless tiger comprised of letter writers who respond to issues by telling complainants that it is not their job, when it is. Don't waste your tax dollars setting up such a money pit of public servants which is next to useless and only runs an issue perhaps once every couple of years so that the public thinks they are doing a good job. They aren't.

              scaremongering.
The Chinese buy off the plan because foriegners are only allowed to buy new in Aus.
If the food was loaded onto a ship and sold in China then it is still sold and the company producing the food in Aus has an income to tax. There are rules around pricing between subsidiarys even though Goofle and Apple (to name just 2) get around it somewhat.

Really? Don't you get the news over there? We sell lots of land (working farms included) to overseas people - hear about the Crafer farms?

              • I don't think the issue is selling the food and paying tax the issue is the food is going to feed the Chinese (or any other country) where is the food for the locals going to come from?

                  • Peters slams suspect island sale

The suspected illegal sale of a Northland island is further evidence of the Government's free-for-all attitude to selling land to foreign interests, New Zealand First leader Winston Peters says.

Motukawaiti Island, the only private island in the Cavallis off Matauri Bay, was sold four years ago to a company called St Morris NZ owned by Auckland-based Chinese nationals.

However, the company did not have permission to buy the island, which is required for land deemed as sensitive under the Overseas Investment Act, yet the sale still went ahead.

The purchase has been under investigation by the Overseas Investment Office (OIO) since 2011.
The reported sale price of $11.5 million four years ago and the current asking price of $30 million showed how "rampant speculation" was forcing land out of New Zealanders' reach, Mr Peters added.

LINZ's general manager of crown property and investment, Brian Usherwood, put the length of the investigation done to its complexity.
"This is a very complex investigation involving a number of individuals and organisations," Mr Usherwood said.

                    • 3 Ray White Auctions last Wednesday night on the shore at Browns Bay.

All 3 sold to Chinese people after blowing away the Pakehas and battling other Chinese.

Just an update for the thread

About 70% of the people in the room of Asian ethnicity.

We have had homestays for the past 17 years so I am reasonably good at picking your Chinese from your Japanese / Korean / Singaporean etc.

                      • Not just the Chinese. Everybody wants us!

New Zealand - going, going, gone.

$1 billion worth of NZ property sold

The country's largest private property fund is selling all the $1 billion-worth of
New Zealand property in its portfolio to Canada's public sector pension fund.

                          • Newsflash! Wherever you live that is vaguely desirable there are wealthier people than you coming in and pushing up house prices. Southern Englanders have had foreigners buying properties in their area for a number of years. Many get sick of the situation and move on to buy properties in nicer parts of Northern England and Scotland where they can sell their one bedroom flat and buy a very desirable house with land that most of the locals in that area can't afford. As a result many frustrated UK people then go on to look for cheaper houses with the attributes they are seeking in mainland Europe, U.S, Canada, NZ etc. Aucklanders look outside of Auckland etc. I've met a few Kiwi's enjoying the higher wages and better employment conditions in NT and WA and buying properties locally. I presume Chinese people and anyone else who is able will do the same.

I'm not saying any of this is good for the local populations involved but isn't it an international phenomenon?

                            • Oh yeah it's a global world alright. In countries like ours, anyone can buy, so we're having to pay the global price for real estate.
                              Squadly dinky do!
