    • Apparently Japan is in a technical recession.
Japan's economy is in technical recession after gross domestic product (GDP)
shrank in the third quarter, defying expectations for growth and
paving the way for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to delay a second sales tax hike.

The world's third-largest economy contracted an annualized 1.6 percent in
the July-September quarter, data showed on Monday, compared with a
Reuters forecast for a 2.1 percent gain. The economy contracted a
revised 7.3 percent in the second quarter.

      • Yes, so what do you do as a government, when you're printing money like it's going out of fashion and your economy goes backwards into recession.

Well they decided to print more money!

But what if that doesn't work? I dunno, I don't have any answers, but fascinating to sit on the sidelines and watch.
        Squadly dinky do!

And more and more and more. Year after year after year.

Stupidity: doing the same thing as before but expecting the result to be better.

          • Japan is on a downward slope without recovery.

The day they stopped innovate was the day they started the downfall.

Panasonic, Sony etc will probably go bankrupt in 5-10 years if they don't innovate more.

            • imho

it's not a lack of innovation, after all they are very near to putting 500kph trains into service

An anonymous reader writes Japan has now put 100 passengers on a Maglev train doing over 500kph. That's well over twice as fast as the fastest U.S. train can manage, and that only manages 240kph on small sections of its route. The Japanese Shinkansen is now running over 7 times times as fast as the...

and the blue/white LED was a huge innovation for the world

the problem is their high wages, pensions, pork barrel politics etc. were granted when they were a booming economy

and need to be wound back now they have been undercut by other economies

              but as a democracy

they are finding the voters won't vote to cut their own 'entitlements

this is a problem all democracies are starting to run into

You do realise that Japan has been downhill for 20 or so years?
Yes, some of their companies have issues but so do many companies around the world.

Highly recommend going there - make it a long holiday.

I, for one, won't be blubbering about their ongoing recessions.

                                Japan to resume whaling

Japan is to vastly expand its Antarctic whaling area, and take 333 minke whales, under a scientific research plan to replace the program ruled illegal at New Zealand's request.
