I am doing some minor repairs on our wooden window frames - mostly patching up corners that have somehow been knocked off, dodgy screw holes, things like that. I have no idea what kind of timber they are, but the windows are about 1920s/30s era and the wood is incredibly hard, so I am thinking probably some kind of native.
I've heard that if you're patching up wood, you should use a similar type of wood - ie use hard wood to patch up hard wood. If you use soft wood to patch up hard wood then supposedly they will expand and contract at different rates and you will be left with cracks.
So, first of all, is that true, and if it is, where (in Wellington) can you get small quantities of hard wood? The hardware stores seem to only stock pine, which is pretty soft compared to whatever my window frames are made of. The only other option I can think of is to see if building recyclers have any off-cuts or random small bits.
