1) Don't play with matches.
2) Seek an agreement with LL where you pay off extra per week.
If (2) isn't do-able owing to inability to pay, then you have a problem I'm afraid. Speak to a tenant's advocate group or citizens advice, but either way you'll need to either catch up over time or leave the property (but you probably won't escape the debt so best get on top of it sooner).

I understand you both would be under a lot of stress right now and your posting here shows that you know the situation needs fixing and want to do something about it. The problem is NOT with your landlord. The problem is your rent is in arrears, and one of your most essential needs (housing) is at risk. Please look at what YOU can do to get this resolved. Have you
Arranged a small loan with the bank?
Asked family for assistance?
Approached WINZ for emergency assistance?
Asked your partner's ACC case manager about how they can help?
Approached Salvation Army Budgeting Services?
Rang the Citizens Advice Bureau for a local social service and/or advice?
Written up a proposed payment plan and presented it to your landlord?
There is always a way out (been there done that myself) but you need to get on the phone/email now. not tomorrow. today.
